Micron launches $10bn research hub
Micron Research Labs will target advanced packaging, memory and compute architectures as part of a planned $10 billion long-term R&D investment.
Micron Technology has unveiled Micron Research Labs, a new U.S.-based research institution focused on long-horizon semiconductor innovation, backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade.
Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, the research hub will focus on areas including critical memory technologies, advanced memory and compute architectures, advanced packaging and future semiconductor manufacturing.
Micron says the initiative is intended to explore technologies beyond current industry roadmaps, with research aimed at supporting future AI and high-performance computing systems.
The company plans to connect researchers at the Boise facility with universities, customers, government organisations and semiconductor ecosystem partners. The investment will also support university collaborations, satellite laboratories and wider research partnerships.
“The decisions we make today will determine who leads the AI economy of tomorrow,” said Sanjay Mehrotra, chairman, president and CEO of Micron Technology.
Micron Research Labs will build on the company’s existing research and technology operations across the U.S., Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan.
The company says the organisation will pursue research with a horizon extending beyond 10 years, including new approaches to memory, compute integration and semiconductor manufacturing.
For advanced packaging, the research could support the development of future memory and compute architectures as increasing AI workloads drive demand for greater bandwidth, density and energy efficiency.
Micron expects to break ground on the new Boise research facility in 2027. The site is planned to accommodate hundreds of researchers and host research conferences, workshops and industry innovation forums.
The new commitment is separate from Micron’s previously announced plans to invest more than $250 billion in U.S. manufacturing and R&D.
